Highlights

  • The new functionality will help businesses manage data and automate protection from threats, including ransomware.
  • The launch of NetBackup 10 by Veritas, during the same time, redefines NetBackup’s industry-leading architecture as the foundation of Autonomous data management and cloud-based data protection.

Veritas Technologies, which ranks among the top 10 leaders in physical enterprise storage and data protection, has moved into the multi-cloud data management software business as it continuously evolves the offerings along the way. Modern data infrastructure includes on-premises resources and multi-cloud platforms. This new approach will create new challenges for data management, such as increased security and complexity.

The company announced the latest addition to its product and service line-up with the launch of new multi-cloud-based functionality that it claims to enhance the existing Autonomous Data Management Platform. The new functionality will help businesses manage data and automate protection from threats, including ransomware.

NetBack moves into the cloud

Veritas also unleashed Veritas Cloud Scale Technology, a new generation of NetBackup architecture that will operate at web-scale. The company also launched its flagship NetBackup software. Both the products, NetBackup software and Veritas Cloud Scale Technology, will be available together.

Veritas evangelist Anthony Cusimano said that Veritas Cloud Scale Technology powering NetBackup will support the strategy as a strong foundation. It delivers a containerized, programmable, and AI-powered microservices architecture that renders unmatched data management services across any cloud. The benefits are realized with the launch of NetBackup 10, which helps in delivering reduced ownership cost, improved efficiency, and security in multi-cloud environments.

Experts’ view

We’re building everything in cloud-scale to pay off what is an autonomous future for our customers,” Cusimano said. “The way to think about two years from now is that it’s all going to be completely automated from a NetBackup perspective. We’ll utilize AI to essentially figure out, manage and manipulate our own environments. This will do the routine jobs of the backup admin, the cloud architect, and maintain that for them, because we know they have more important things to do than to be checking in on their backup policies or building new policies when a new workload comes in.

Instead, we will automate all of that ourselves. This also means that we’ll be able to auto-upgrade and auto-provision, and we’re able to auto-scale and shrink. So, it’s a self-motivated as well as a customer-motivated transformation,” Cusimano said.

“It’s easy for organizations to end up with a patchwork of piecemeal data protection solutions in the cloud, where individual workloads and applications have been deployed by new functional decision-makers and managed in silos,” Christophe Bertrand, Practice Director at ESG, said in a media advisory. “But over time, these add up, creating a continually growing cost and management burden that quickly becomes unsustainable at scale. To avoid this, enterprises need a long-term solution that can help to reduce the footprint of their cloud backup and automate its management.”

Deepak Mohan, Executive Vice President of products at Veritas, said: “Enterprises are accelerating their cloud transformation to deliver new business outcomes where they need a broad and modern platform to cost effectively provide data protection and ransomware resiliency in multi-cloud environments. NetBackup solves this problem today, and NetBackup 10 powered by Cloud Scale Technology is the first step in delivering industry-leading Autonomous Data Management, on-premises and in the cloud. This new technology will continuously self-provision, self-optimize and self-heal data management services.”

Randy Kerns, Senior Strategist and Analyst at Evaluator Group, said: “Enterprise data management must transform to meet the needs of multi-cloud infrastructures where customers have their critical data. The result of transforming data management is lower total cost of ownership and improved return on investment. As the foundation for the Veritas roadmap to Autonomous Data Management, Veritas Cloud Scale Technology enables that transformation.”
