MariaDB plc has announced the extension of its Xpand distributed database management system to PostgreSQL users, in addition to its existing customer base.
Michael Howard, the Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our vision is to take databases to new heights of scale and resilience in any cloud at a fraction of the cost of competitors.” According to his statement, Xpand allows the company to expand its SkySQL cloud DBMS to a greater extent and cater to a broader range of potential clients. Postgres is the fourth most popular database management system, according to the DB-Engines ranking by SolidIT Consulting and amp; Software Development gmbh.
Xpand is a distributed SQL database designed to provide high resilience and scalability. The system is designed to endure infrastructure failures and maintain availability by storing multiple data copies on distinct database nodes. According to the company’s statement, Xpand provides a 2.5-fold increase in throughput and a four-fold reduction in latency compared to the previous version of SkySQL.
During the OpenWorks conference held in New York City this week, MariaDB showcased how the integration of PostgreSQL and Xpand’s technology allowed the distributed SQL DBMS to exceed the constraints of traditional primary/replica architectures. This resulted in a five-fold increase in users and twice the throughput compared to PostgreSQL operating independently.
During the conference, MariaDB showcased a geospatial edition of its DBMS, built on the technology obtained through the acquisition of CubeWerx Inc. in the previous year. MariaDB Geospatial is “a developer-first, application program interface-driven solution that embraces open standard interfaces for web mapping and geospatial queries.” The product provides customers a versatile solution by integrating vector storage within the database and raster storage in cloud object storage.
The company also announced that it is extending its cloud backup service to databases operating on-premises as well as other cloud infrastructures, with archives that can be restored to the customer’s preferred cloud.
SkySQL will soon offer a technical preview of PostgreSQL integrated with Xpand. SkySQL offers technical previews of MariaDB Geospatial and Cloud Backup.
