Recently, a startup focused on productivity platforms, Cortex Applications Inc., raised USD 60 million in new funding. This investment aims to boost developer awareness of its internal developer platform and expand its capabilities with improved workflows, engineering intelligence, and artificial intelligence.

Established in 2019, Cortex provides an internal developer platform designed to assist companies in cataloging, scoring, and assigning actions to enhance service quality and speed. Its aim is to enable developers to focus on tasks that propel the business forward.

Cortex is fundamentally designed to support engineering teams in managing their software development processes by serving as a centralized information hub. It offers a single source of truth, enabling teams to swiftly access information on software ownership, operational status, and resource allocation, thus reducing time spent searching for crucial data. By centralizing elements such as service catalogs and compliance metrics, Cortex enhances organizational visibility and control over the development environment.

Moreover, Cortex seeks to promote a culture of continuous improvement through its diverse features. The platform provides cataloging capabilities that allow teams to centralize information on service ownership and resources. Its scoring and assessment tools establish minimum service requirements and continuously evaluate compliance, offering prescriptive guidance and actionable recommendations for enhancement.

Cortex claims to substantially boost developer productivity by automating routine tasks like ownership tracking and setup processes. The platform connects with identity providers and incident management tools to automatically update software ownership and on-call information. Additionally, it offers predefined “golden paths” for development, streamlining the setup time and minimizing complexity when creating new software.

Cortex’s notable clients include Adobe Inc., Grammarly Inc., and Opendoor Technologies Inc.

The funding round was led by Scale Venture Partners LP, with participation from Sequoia Capital Operations, Institutional Venture Partners, and Y Combinator Management.

“We’re investing in Cortex because it’s solving two mission-critical issues for engineering teams: centralizing the information needed to understand, operate and build new software, and creating a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement. The world’s largest enterprises are betting on Cortex to drive the future of their developer experience,” said Eric Anderson, Scale Venture Partners partner.

According to sources, funding round was based on a USD 470 million valuation.
