Recently, a cloud-native spatial analytics and artificial intelligence startup, Wherobots Inc., has raised USD 21.5 million in funding to enhance its efforts in bridging the intelligence gap between the physical and digital worlds with innovative solutions.

Founded in 2022 by the creators of Apache Sedona, an open-source geospatial computing tool for Apache Spark and Apache Flink, the company provides the Spatial Intelligence Cloud. This service empowers organizations to process and analyze geospatial data on a planetary scale. Its purpose is to efficiently manage and derive insights from massive volumes of global location-based data, regardless of size or complexity, enabling businesses to uncover actionable intelligence.

Wherobots contends that, despite the vast amounts of spatial data generated by billions of satellites, sensors, and GPS-enabled devices, much of this data remains underutilized. Analyzing spatial data presents challenges because most modern analytics tools are designed for internet data rather than geospatial data. When organizations attempt to repurpose existing solutions for geospatial analytics, they often encounter issues such as slow performance, lack of essential features, vendor lock-in, limited scalability, or excessive costs.

Wherobots tackles the challenges of handling spatial data by enabling companies to process spatial workloads up to 20 times faster than current cloud-based analytics engines. This significantly speeds up idea implementation, enhances productivity, and reduces costs.

“Our mission is to make it easy for our customers to utilize geospatial data. By deploying Wherobots on their spatial data, companies are bringing products to market faster, they’re calculating risk and reward with higher accuracy, and are making better decisions for their operations at scale,” said Chief Executive Mo Sarwat.

Wherobots delivers serverless, planetary-scale geospatial data solutions tailored for extract, transform, and load (ETL) pipelines, analytics, and computer vision applications using satellite imagery, among other use cases. The platform streamlines development with robust support for vector and raster data, offering accessibility through languages like SQL, Python, and Java/Scala.

According to the company, industries like insurance, environmental management, transportation, logistics, supply chain, and agriculture can harness Wherobots and Apache Sedona to process spatial data more effectively. This capability enables organizations to address key questions more quickly, fostering innovation and enhancing decision-making across multiple sectors.

The Series A funding round was led by Felicis Ventures, with participation from Wing Venture Capital, Clear Ventures, JetBlue Ventures, and P7 Ventures. The investment will support Wherobots in advancing product development and expanding its go-to-market efforts, enabling organizations to unlock the full potential of geospatial data in the cloud.
