WSO2, an open-source API management provider, has taken a step further to build APIs, services, and integrations with the launch of Choreo, a digital platform-as-a-service (PaaS). The production-ready version of the platform was released on March 30, and it runs on the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform.
It is available for the developers to use; they can sign up for Choreo at wso2.com. It is designated as a low-code environment for professional developers of cloud-native APIs, integrations, and microservices. Choreo uses open-source, cloud-native Ballerina language, deep observability, and AI-assisted development.
Developers can build API-driven business logic, which can be re-used. According to WSO2, Choreo runs on Microsoft Azure and can move developers from the idea stage to the production stage in just hours, not weeks. Because it is being offered as a beta release, Choreo has added integration with Microsoft’s famous Visual Studio Code (VS Code) source code editor. Developers can use VS code within the browser while working within Choreo to benefit from a visual, low-code editing experience. The new marketplace of Choreo allows the discovery and reuse of APIs and services.
What are the key offerings of Choreo?
- Developers with different skill sets can build apps using graphical flow diagrams and code views side-by-side with round-trip synchronization. AI-assisted development promotes productivity and faster time to market. These capabilities will help developers to focus on building core logic.
- It brings security and governance by default. An API gateway brings rate-limiting, encryption of messages, and authentication. It offers API lifecycle management as well.
- The platform offers simplified DevOps and deployment with built-in CI/CD and observability for deploying applications on Kubernetes. It enables the team to work on making production-ready applications instead of handling infrastructure.
Experts’ view
“The ability to quickly deliver new digital products and services separates the market leaders from the followers in almost every industry,” said Eric Newcomer, WSO2 Chief Technology Officer. “The Choreo digital platform as a service democratizes the necessary capabilities for building cloud native apps and services. Now developers can immediately collaborate on creating, deploying, securing, and monetizing APIs, integrations and services that deliver business value and great customer experiences.”
“A modern digital PaaS should blur the lines between app dev, integration, and security, and democratize participation in delivering digital experiences without excessive technical overhead. WSO2’s Choreo offers a platform for both developers and business experts to get their arms around the complexity of building and deploying API-driven cloud native applications,” said Jason English, Principal Analyst, Intellyx.
“Delivering cloud native applications is a challenging, time-consuming process,” said Kanchana Wickremasinghe, Vice President and General Manager of the WSO2 Integration Business Unit. “Our Choreo digital PaaS hides that complexity, so developers, DevOps teams, and site reliability engineers can team to efficiently build, deploy, observe, secure and manage the applications, APIs and integrations driving their digital innovation.”
